Sock Size Calculator
Socks are sized by shoe size, but the labels (S/M/L/XL or numbers like 9–11) are inconsistent between brands. Enter your shoe size to find the size band you most likely need.
Unlike shoes, most socks stretch to fit a range of sizes, which is why a single pair is labelled to cover several shoe sizes. The two systems you will see are letter sizes (S, M, L, XL) and the older hosiery numbers (for example 9–11 or 10–13), which roughly describe foot length in inches. This tool maps your shoe size to both.

Why sock fit matters for your feet
A sock that is too small pulls the toes together and creates pressure ridges, which can worsen corns, ingrown toenails and blisters. Too large, and the excess fabric bunches and rubs — one of the most common hidden causes of friction blisters. A correctly sized sock has its heel pocket sitting on your heel, not riding up the back of the foot, and a toe seam that lies flat across the toes rather than gripping them.
If you wear orthotics or have diabetes, fit matters even more: seams and tight cuffs can create pressure points on skin that may not feel them. Look for seamless or hand-linked toe socks and a non-binding top.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I know my sock size?
- Socks are sized by shoe size. Find the band that contains your shoe size in the chart above, or use the calculator. Because socks stretch, you rarely need to be exact.
- What does a sock size of 9-11 mean?
- It is an older hosiery scale based loosely on foot length in inches. A 9-11 sock typically fits a women's US shoe size 5-10 or a men's 6-8.5; 10-13 fits larger feet.
- Should socks be tight or loose?
- Neither. A good sock hugs the foot without squeezing, the heel pocket sits on your heel, and the toe seam lies flat. Bunching means too big; pressure marks mean too small.
- Do compression socks use the same sizing?
- No. Graduated compression socks are sized by ankle and calf measurements plus shoe size, not shoe size alone. See our compression socks guide for how to measure.
