Walking Pace Calculator

Built by the FootWell team · Edited by Mustafa Bilgic · Last updated 27 June 2026

Turn a distance and a time into your walking pace, speed and calories burned — useful for training, weight goals or just knowing how brisk your walk really is.

Pace is how long it takes to cover one unit of distance (minutes per mile or per kilometre); speed is the reverse (miles or kilometres per hour). This tool works out both, then estimates calories using a walking MET value matched to your speed — faster walking burns disproportionately more, so the estimate changes with pace, not just distance.

Your pace, speed and calories will appear here.

What counts as a brisk walk?

Public-health guidance usually defines “brisk” walking — the pace that counts toward moderate-intensity activity — as roughly 5–6.4 km/h (3–4 mph), or about a 15–20 minute mile. Here is how common paces line up:

How the calorie estimate works

The tool picks a walking MET value from your speed (about 3.0 METs for a casual amble up to 7.0 for a fast power walk) and applies the formula calories = MET × weight in kg × hours. Because pace drives the MET, walking the same distance faster genuinely burns more — though the difference is smaller than most people assume. Treat the figure as a planning estimate, not a precise total; terrain, wind, load and individual efficiency all shift it.

Pushing pace also changes the load on your feet. If you are ramping up speed or distance, do it gradually to avoid stress fractures and plantar fasciitis, and walk in supportive walking shoes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good walking pace?
For general fitness, a brisk pace of about 5-6.4 km/h (3-4 mph), or a 15-20 minute mile, is the usual target. It should leave you slightly breathless but still able to talk.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Speed in km/h equals 60 divided by your pace in minutes per km. A 12-minute km is 5 km/h; a 10-minute km is 6 km/h.
How many calories does a 30-minute walk burn?
Very roughly 100-200 kcal for most adults, depending on weight and pace. Enter your numbers above for a tailored estimate.
Is walking pace the same as running pace math?
Yes, the pace and speed formulas are identical. Only the calorie (MET) values differ, because running burns more energy at the same speed.
